TEENS IN TRANSITION FROM LEARNING TO EARNING
Among the major dilemmas facing Philadelphia and the country today is the unemployment among teenagers, especially the minority ones. Minority youths who are inadequately prepared to enter into the working world are either rejected by the labor force or accepted for labor that requires low mental concentration and provides promotional chances that are nil. What can be done to resolve this?
Teens in Transition from Learning to Earning is an inclusive literature review that addresses the readiness of the high school teens to work, the need to help the minority females, and the study of existing programs and formulation of a plan. Are the teens ready for the working world? If the answer is favorable, does it apply equally to all? If there is a problem, what steps should be taken to solve it? These issues are given importance in order to see which sector of the teen population needs assistance more than the others, to delve deep and point out the deficiencies of the educational system, and to determine their strengths and weaknesses and their applicability and suitability to the programs.
The author presents this job-readiness program to give awareness to minority students and to train them by covering the areas that are not dealt with in their high school education. The eventual purpose of this program is to provide these students with skills and attitudes to increase the chances of acquiring and holding jobs upon graduation from high school, at the same time help improve the existing job training programs presented in school.
Teens in Transition from Learning to Earning will provide the means to enhance the teens’ ability to seek, gain, obtain, and maintain employment. To further enhance the program participants’ employability and skill sets, Schwartz has added computer-training sessions to the job readiness-training program, believing that computer literacy will give the participants the edge that is needed to compete successfully in today’s world of work. This is not only for Philadelphia—this is also for the world.
